After Oskar’s father dies on 9/11, he discovers a key in a vase that belonged to his father. This inspires him to search New York City for information about the key.
The trailer for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close makes the film appear to be another saccharine sweet film about the families affected by 9/11. There is no doubt that this was a huge tragedy, and an event that will overshadow our lives for countless years to come, but the trailer for the film appears to be blatant manipulation.
I first saw this trailer with an American friend of mine, who insisted that she will never watch the movie because of it’s ties with 9/11 – see? Manipulation.
Emotional twisting aside, this really is not a good trailer. It is acceptable until the U2 track kicks in and then the action on screen is literally acting out the lyrics to the song:
I want to run – Oskar runs
I want to hide – Max Von Sydow hides behind his hand
I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside – Oskar throws a box of keys and has a little flip out
I want to reach out – Shots of the people that Oskar connects with in his search for answers about the key
…And touch the flame – various shots of people laying their hands on one another
To me, this just comes off as lazy editing.
I am still curious about the film, but not because of this dreadful trailer.
Perhaps it is actually hoax. Like the every oscar winner movie trailer
