Trailer Talk: Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows is the new film from Tim Burton, and it stars all of his favourite actors including Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. The film is based on the cult TV sitcom and is due for release this May.

Tim Burton’s most recent effort Alice in Wonderland was something of a disappointment, but the good news is that this first trailer for Dark Shadows looks fantastic. Johnny Depp plays Barnabus Collins, a man who was cursed by a witch and turned into a vampire. 200 years later, he is awoken in the 1970s and has to get to grips with the changes around him as well as take on the witch who originally cursed him (Eva Green).

From this trailer, the film looks to be a lot of fun. Johnny Depp is camping it up on screen and obviously is having a great time playing the dark, angry and confused Barnabus – a character he confesses that he was obsessed with as a child. Depp’s confusion at the ‘modern day’ is hilariously deadpan and he looks fantastic – no dreadlocks here! Eva Green is similarly silly and Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Grace Moretz and Michelle Pfeiffer round out the cast in some glorious wigs and fantastic costumes.

The trailer starts off with a similar dark look and tone to Burton’s version of Sweeney Todd, but as soon as Superfly kicks in, it becomes a riot of colour and takes the audience back to the camp and over the top vampire stories of the past – there are no sparkly eternal beings here. As well as this, there is a touch of melodrama and a heck of a lot of showmanship. Sounds perfect to me!

Tim Burton seems to have eased up on the seriousness for this outing, and it looks like camp, silly fun with a fantastic soundtrack and just the right amount of Burtonesque touches; watch out for a nod to the vampires in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Dark Shadows is released on May 11th in Ireland.
