2012 is shaping up to be quite the year for nostalgia. Not only have we had re-releases of some of the films that defined our youth – including Titanic and Beauty and The Beast – but on June 1st, Top Cat is back!
For those of you who are too young to remember, Top Cat is a Hanna Barbera animated series that followed the lives of a gang of Manhattan alley cats, and their clashes with police who try to evict them. Top Cat is the gang’s leader, a yellow cat loaded with street smarts who is backed up by cats with fantastic names, including Fancy-Fancy, Benny the Ball and Choo Choo. The show ran for 30 episodes between 1961 and 1962, and many of us grew up watching re-runs of the vibrant show.
Anima Studios and Eclipse Pictures are bringing Top Cat to our cinema screens in June 2012, and are allowing us to re-live our youths spent watching Top Cat on Saturday mornings. The good news is that the movie is done in a similar style to the original TV show, and doesn’t mix live action and animation like some films I will not mention… Although the mix of CG and hand drawn animation looks a little strange.
The story follows Benny the Ball, Fancy Fancy, Choo Choo, Spook and Brain, and the indisputable leader of the gang TC, who are back at war with the long arm of the law when the menacing Police Chief Strickland moves to town, ousting the bumbling Officer Dibble.
Determined to put a stop to the feline antics in Hoagy’s Alley with the help of a bullying robot police force, the tech-savvy Strickland threatens to be the most dastardly enemy the gang has ever faced. With their wise-guy lifestyle hanging in the balance, TC and friends are forced to cash in on another of their nine lives to curtail Strickland’s reign of terror and claw their way back to the top!
From the trailer – odd clashes of animation aside – it looks as though TC and his friends are up to their usual tricks; scamming and tricking the people of New York City in order to survive. Thankfully, they have a sense of humour about their predicament and their adventures look to be fun and a little silly.
