Rant – Oscar Nominations – Predictions

It is that time of year again where film fanatics gather in unlikely places and discuss who should be Oscar nominated, and for what. We all know that we have two lists; those that should win, and those that we think will actually win. That’s for another time though. For now, here are my predictions as to which films will be nominated, and we will find out on Thursday whether I am right or horrifically wrong…

Best Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln
Joaquin Phoenix – The Master
Suraj Sharma – Life of Pi
Jean-Louis Trintignant – Amour
Mads Mikkelsen – The Hunt
I know I have a lot of ‘Foreign’ film performances in there, but 2012 really was the year of standout performances that were not in the English language. Also, I would love to see Joseph Gordon Levitt nominated for Looper, but I think that’s more of a Golden Globe award winner, I could be wrong though…

Best Actress
Jessica Chastain – Zero Dark Thirty
Maggie Smith – Quartet
Emmanuelle Riva – Amour
Marion Cotillard – Rust and Bone
Kiera Knightley – Anna Karenina
It has not exactly been an outstanding year for female performances. I don’t think Knightley really has a shot and Maggie Smith is only in there because she is always nominated…

Supporting Actor
Christoph Waltz – Django Unchained
Samuel L. Jackson – Django Unchained
Philip Seymour Hoffman – The Master
Guy Pearce – Lawless
Garret Hedlund – On The Road
I don’t seriously consider my last two having a shot, but the Academy always throws in some surprises…

Supporting Actress
Amy Adams – The Master
Anne Hathaway – Les Misérables
Judi Dench – Skyfall
Helen Hunt – The Sessions
Sally Field – Lincoln
I do not think Anne Hathaway’s performance in Les Mis was Oscar worthy, but there is not doubt that she will be nominated somewhere.

Best Director
Ben Affleck – Argo
Ang Lee – Life of Pi
Tom Hooper – Les Misérables
Steven Speilberg – Lincoln
Quentin Tarantino – Django Unchained
I don’t think Tarantino will win, but Django has been so well received in the US that it is hard to imagine it won’t be nominated.

Best Picture
Zero Dark Thirty
Les Misérables
The Master
The Avengers
Killer Joe
Cloud Atlas
Best Picture is always a mixed bag, so you never know!

DocumentaryThe Imposter
Animated Feature Rise of the Guardians
Original Song Skyfall/Les Misérables
CinematographyThe Hobbit
Foreign Language FilmAmour
Art Direction Anna Karenina
Visual EffectsThe Hobbit

As to whether I am right… We shall find out tmrw.
